Wellbeing

At our school, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Whether your child needs help with their mental, emotional, social or physical wellbeing, we are here to help them thrive at school and in daily life.

How we support student wellbeing

Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.

We do this through:

Positive Behavior for Learning

At Ellison Public School we believe that Wellbeing contributes to making safe, effective teaching and learning environments that enable students to be healthy, happy, successful and productive.

We believe that children learn best when students, parents, carers and teachers have a common and transparent understanding of expectations.

Parents and carers are responsible for ensuring their children attend school everyday. They share in the responsibility of shaping their children’s understandings and attitudes about acceptable behaviour. Please see your child’s teacher first regarding any concerns you may have.

Teachers have a duty of care to their students and also the responsibility for providing programs which meet the needs of all students. The school is responsible for communicating with parents and carers about behaviour and the educational progress of their students. The school is also active in teaching and role modeling appropriate social skills and behaviours which will not only help students achieve their potential, but will also allow them to be active and responsible participants in the community when they leave school.

At Ellison Public School we have four expectations in all areas of school life:

Our Care Motto- Co-operative, Achieving, Responsible and Engaged in fun character letters.

Please contact the school office for a copy of the Ellison Public School Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) CARE Guide for further details.

CARE Awards and Bellbird Awards

At our school, we proudly recognise student achievements through Bellbird Awards and CARE Awards.

CARE Awards are given by classroom teachers to students who exemplify one of the CARE principles: Cooperative, Achieving, Responsible, or Engaged. These awards are presented during our school assemblies.

Bellbird Awards are earned by collecting Bellbird tokens, which teachers award to students for positive behaviours and efforts in line with the CARE principals. Tokens are recorded in each student’s Bellbird Book and accumulate throughout the year. Students receive a Bronze Award for 5 tokens, Silver for 15, Gold for 45, and Platinum for 135 tokens.

CARE Awards and Bellbird Awards celebrate and encourage our students’ ongoing dedication and positive contributions to our school community.

Daruga Draw

Students who are ‘caught’ following the school rules can be given a ‘Duruga’ (Dharug for “falling star”) ticket by any member of staff. The use of the word, “Duruga” reflects the connection our school has to the Darug people and its location on “Comet Place”. These tickets are used in any setting inside and outside the classroom such as the office, Library and Technology lessons, Scripture, sport, assemblies and excursions.

Every Friday 4 tickets (2 from K-2 and 2 from 3-6) are drawn from the ‘Duruga’ ticket boxes and winners choose a reward.
